How to Create a QR Code Online for Free

QR codes bridge the physical and digital world — from restaurant menus to business cards to event check-ins. Learn the different QR code types, real-world use cases, and how to generate and download a high-quality QR code for free.

QR codes have made a complete comeback. After years of being dismissed as a novelty, the pandemic normalized scanning — and now they appear on everything from restaurant tables and product packaging to billboards and business cards. A well-configured QR code is invisible when it works and frustrating when it doesn't. Understanding the different types, the right sizes, and error correction levels ensures your QR code actually delivers users to the right destination every time it's scanned.

Types of QR Codes and When to Use Each

URL QR Codes

The most common type. Encodes a web URL so that scanning opens a browser and navigates to the page automatically. Use for: directing users from physical materials to your website, product pages, landing pages, or online menus. Always use a shortened or tracked URL so you can measure scans over time.

vCard QR Codes

Encodes contact information (name, phone, email, company, address) in the vCard format. When scanned, most smartphones offer to save the contact directly to the address book. Ideal for business cards — replace the wall of text with a single QR code and let the phone do the work.

WiFi QR Codes

Encodes WiFi network credentials (SSID, password, encryption type). When scanned, the phone connects to the network without the user typing a password. Perfect for cafés, hotels, event venues, co-working spaces, and anywhere guests need WiFi access. A 2-second scan replaces a 30-second password hunt.

Email QR Codes

Pre-populates an email with a recipient address, subject line, and body text. When scanned, the user's email app opens with the message ready to send. Useful for feedback forms, support requests, or event RSVPs where you want a specific format.

Phone Number QR Codes

Encodes a phone number. Scanning prompts the user to call the number immediately. Works well on signage, flyers, and print ads where quick contact is the goal.

Plain Text QR Codes

Displays a text message when scanned — no app launch, no browser. Useful for: short instructions, coupon codes, serial numbers, or any situation where you just need to surface text quickly without network access.

QR Code Use Cases by Industry

  • Restaurants — digital menus, order-at-table links, loyalty program signups.
  • Events — ticket scanning, agenda PDFs, Wi-Fi access for attendees, post-event feedback forms.
  • Business cards — vCard QR codes that eliminate the need to type contact details.
  • Retail and packaging — product instruction pages, warranty registration, promotional landing pages.
  • Marketing materials — flyers, posters, direct mail pieces linking to campaign landing pages with UTM tracking.
  • Healthcare — appointment booking, intake forms, medication information pages.

Size and Error Correction: Getting the Technical Details Right

QR codes have four error correction levels: L (7% damage tolerance), M (15%), Q (25%), and H (30%). Higher error correction means the QR code can still scan even if damaged or partially obscured — but the code becomes denser and requires more contrast. For most uses, level M is the right balance. Use level H for QR codes where a logo will be overlaid in the center, which intentionally obscures part of the code.

For print: generate at minimum 300 DPI and at least 2 cm x 2 cm. For outdoor signage at distance, scale up — a code on a banner 3 meters away should be at least 10 cm x 10 cm. Test every QR code by scanning it on multiple devices before printing.

How to Use the WebSurfTools QR Code Generator

  1. Go to QR Code Generator.
  2. Select the QR code type: URL, vCard, WiFi, Email, Phone, or Text.
  3. Enter the relevant content for your chosen type.
  4. Select an error correction level — use H if you plan to add a logo.
  5. Customize foreground/background colors to match your brand (ensure high contrast — light background, dark code).
  6. Click Generate QR Code.
  7. Download as PNG (for digital use) or SVG (for print — scales infinitely without quality loss).

Real-World Example

A boutique hotel in Barcelona placed WiFi QR codes on every room's welcome card. Guests scanned the code to connect to the room-specific network instantly, eliminating the most common front desk call. The hotel also added a URL QR code on the card linking to their local recommendations page — which increased engagement with their affiliate restaurant partnerships by 34%. Total setup time: 20 minutes using the QR Code Generator to create 80 room-specific WiFi codes in batch.

For printed materials that need a scannable product identifier rather than a link, the Barcode Generator handles linear barcodes. For business documents, the Invoice Generator and Email Signature Generator complete the professional toolkit.

FAQ

Do QR codes expire?
Static QR codes (the free type) never expire — they encode information directly and work as long as the destination URL is live. Dynamic QR codes (from paid services) can expire when subscriptions lapse, but they offer tracking and redirect-change features.

Can I change where a QR code points after printing?
Not with a static QR code. This is why it's smart to point static codes at a URL you control (your own domain) and redirect from there, so you can change the final destination without reprinting anything.

Why won't my QR code scan?
Common causes: insufficient contrast (dark code on dark background), too small for the scan distance, or the encoded URL is broken. Always test on at least three different devices and scan from the expected distance before finalizing.

Is there a data limit for QR codes?
Yes. QR codes can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters, but larger payloads create denser codes that are harder to scan. Keep URLs short (use a link shortener if needed) and vCard data concise for best scan reliability.
